Bf 109G — balance weights 1:24 (Eduard, 3D printing)

Note right at the start: this is not an airplane kit. It is a detail set from Eduard, made by direct 3D printing, which replaces injection-molded plastic parts on a model already under construction. It is intended for the Airfix Messerschmitt Bf 109G kit in 1:24 scale (the G-5 and G-6 versions). Without the base kit you cannot build a model from it.

What the counterweights are and why to replace them

On the control surfaces of the Bf 109 — typically on the ailerons — sit small mass weights on thin arms that project beyond the outline of the surface. They provide mass balancing of the control surface, suppressing dangerous oscillation (flutter) at higher speeds. On the real aircraft they are slender and sharply shaped; for technical reasons an injection mold makes them thicker and softer, or the model does not have them at all. 3D printing manages the thin arm and the sharp edge without a mold parting line.

1:24 is a huge scale — the model is large and absolutely every detail shows on it. That is exactly why aftermarket detailing pays off most at this size: what nobody notices in the small scales is glaring here. The weights also sit on the wing, right at the eye level of the viewer.

Usage tips

Material from a 3D printer is not glued with polystyrene cement: it does not react to it at all. Use cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) or epoxy. First wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent to remove print resin and uncured resin residue, otherwise the paint will not hold. If anything needs sanding, sand it wet only — the dust that forms is harmful and must not be inhaled. The thin arms of the weights break easily: separate them from the printing support with a sharp scalpel or a fine saw, never snap them off, and fit them at the very end of the build, after varnishing and once the decals have dried.
