An injection-molded plastic kit of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 racing car in 1:24 scale from Tamiya, whose car kits are taken as the benchmark for fit. The package contains rubber tires, painting masks, mesh for the intake openings, a plated part for the radiator grille and decals, among other things for the yellow markings, the AMG logos and an imitation of carbon fiber. The finished model measures roughly 198 mm.
The Mercedes-AMG GT3 is not a road car — it is a homologated racing car of the GT3 category. It has an extensive aerodynamic package, a massive rear wing and a diffuser, a roll cage, a bucket seat and a racing interior without any comfort at all. It is raced in endurance and sprint GT events. In 2016, in the colors of the HTP Motorsport team, it took both the drivers and the teams titles in the Blancpain GT Series, and at the Nürburgring 24 Hours Mercedes-AMG GT3 cars took the first four places.
The body has to be perfectly smooth — with a racing car that is the absolute basis. Unlike a tank, where small imperfections hide under the weathering, here gloss paint is sprayed and then polished, and in gloss every scratch and every mold parting line shows. Scrape the parting lines off, sand with ever finer abrasives, apply a primer, check the surface against the light and only then spray the paint.
The extensive racing and sponsor decals are the main work on this model. They have to settle onto the curved surfaces of the body, which is practically impossible without a decal softener; the softener softens the decal and literally sucks it onto the shapes and pressings. Always apply the decals onto a gloss base, or silvering will appear underneath them. A proven finish: spray a clear coat over the finished decals, let it dry thoroughly and polish it over; that hides the edge of the decal and gives the model the wet gloss of a real race car. Finish the interior, the cage and the chassis before you close the body up. Do not glue the rubber tires with cement for plastic.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
