About product

The Gloster Sea Gladiator Mk.II in 1:32 scale from ICM

An injection-molded plastic kit from the Ukrainian manufacturer ICM. The large 1:32 scale gives room for the detail that is lost in smaller scales: the shaping of the ribbed covering, the cockpit framing, the radial engine and the arrangement of struts and bracing wires between the wings. The finished model has a respectable size and in a cabinet it works as an exhibit in its own right.

The real subject

The Gloster Gladiator was the last British biplane fighter in front-line service. The Sea Gladiator came about as its naval adaptation for the Fleet Air Arm: it received a tailhook for landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier, catapult attachments and, under the fuselage, a space for a life raft. A Bristol Mercury radial engine provided the power and the armament consisted of .303 caliber machine guns. The aircraft entered service at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s and was used among other places in the Mediterranean and over northern Europe. Although it already represented a closing chapter in concept when it appeared, it was agile and handled well.

Building and painting tips

With a biplane the geometry decides. Finish and paint the cockpit and the engine before you close the fuselage up — once it is glued you will no longer reach them. Let the lower wing harden properly on the fuselage and only then fit the struts and the upper wing; it pays to build a simple support that holds the upper surface at the right height and angle until the glue sets. Use a thin cement for plastic, which flows into the joint by capillary action and leaves you time to line things up. Rig the bracing wires only after the finish is done; elastic filament or drawn monofilament works well. Spray gloss clear under the decals and, after the decals and the wash, seal the whole thing with matte.

Who the model is for

  • anyone interested in British interwar and early wartime aviation
  • modelers who want a large model for a cabinet
  • builders with experience of biplanes and bracing wires
  • collectors of Fleet Air Arm carrier aircraft

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The naval version received a tailhook for landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier, catapult attachments and a space for a life raft under the fuselage.

A biplane is always a step more demanding than a monoplane because of setting the upper wing and the bracing wires. The large 1:32 scale does make handling the parts easier, though, so with a little patience it is a manageable project.

A kit does not normally include material for the bracing wires. Count on obtaining filament or monofilament separately.

The number of schemes and the particular markings are given in the instructions supplied with the kit.
