1:35/1:32 Trench base is a small resin base with a cutaway trench, intended for a single figure in two large scales.
Responsibility details are not available.
The base is cast in resin and measures roughly four centimeters a side. The manufacturer declares it for 1:35 and 1:32 at once, because the difference between these scales hardly shows on a cutaway of terrain. A figure placed on it therefore gets a setting without your having to build a whole diorama.
Field fortification went with the infantry of both world wars. The walls were strengthened with boards, wattle or sacks, and the floor was lined with duckboards so that the soldiers did not stand in mud. A cutaway trench therefore offers something a flat board never gives: a difference in height that lends the figure movement and justifies its stance. A figure leaning out over the edge, crouched against the wall or resting an elbow on the parapet tells a story on its own, without a single further accessory.
Sand resin wet and with your airways protected, because the dust from it is very fine. Seat the base on a wooden plinth and attach the figure to it with cyanoacrylate, ideally on a wire pin. Soil comes out well when you apply a lighter dry brush over a dark base and pigments at the end. A little static grass in the corners will round the scene off.
In color it pays to keep to one kind of earth and to vary the shades only in saturation, so that the scene does not go gaudy. Damp spots at the bottom are imitated by gloss varnish applied in small patches.
