About product

8.8 cm Flak on the 9t VOMAG chassis 1:35, a Das Werk plastic kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the German self-propelled anti-aircraft gun 8.8 cm Flak auf 9t VOMAG in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer Das Werk. The molds for both the vehicle and the gun are entirely new. The package contains a complete 8.8 cm Flak (without the shield), a complete engine, multi-part wheels, extensive photo-etch, clear parts, ammunition racks with rounds and decals for four marking options. The key feature: the gun can be built in the travel position as well as in the firing position, and the folding hull sides with their photo-etched grilles can be done folded down or raised, which with self-propelled guns is the main reason to buy a kit like this. The stowage bins and the doors can be shown open or closed.

The real subject

The 8.8 cm Flak is the legendary German anti-aircraft weapon which, as soon became clear, served just as well or even better as an anti-tank gun: a flat trajectory and penetrating power made it the most feared gun of its day. Its drawback was its unwieldiness, because deploying it into a firing position from the towed configuration took a long time. The answer was a self-propelled version, the eighty-eight set straight onto the bed of a heavy VOMAG truck of 9 tons capacity, able to fire straight from the vehicle once the sides had been folded down.

Worth knowing: this was not an improvisation and not a mere prototype; the vehicle was really designed and built, and photographs exist from as early as 1941. Only a little over twenty were made, though, and they were used by a single anti-aircraft unit. It is therefore a distinctly rare machine, which for a model is more of an advantage than a drawback.

Building and painting tips

Decide in advance whether you are building the gun in the firing or in the travel position, because it affects the assembly of the sides and the mounting. Paint and dust the engine and the chassis before you close the bed up. Glue the photo-etch, above all the grilles of the sides, with super glue, and the plastic with thin cement for plastic. Apply a primer before painting. Spray the base (gray, or the later dark yellow with camouflage) with an airbrush and light the upper surfaces up. Build the weathering in layers: a wash into the pressings and the rivets, a dry brush on the edges, pigments for dust and mud in the wheel arches and on the wheels, and fine chipping on the crew platform where the crew walked. Fit the long barrel at the very end so that it does not get damaged.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of German Second World War vehicles and fans of the eighty-eight
  • modelers looking for an unusual, rare machine instead of another tank
  • builders of dioramas, because a vehicle in the firing position with its crew is a rewarding scene
  • more experienced modelers who can handle extensive photo-etch and the detail of an engine

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The vehicle was really designed and built, and photographs survive from as early as 1941. Only a little over twenty were made, though, and they served with a single anti-aircraft unit, so it is a rare machine.

Yes. The manufacturer states that the gun can be assembled in the travel as well as the firing position and set in elevation and in traverse. The folding hull sides with their photo-etched grilles can be done folded down or raised.

It was designed as an anti-aircraft gun, but thanks to its flat trajectory and its penetrating power it proved exceptionally effective as an anti-tank weapon. The self-propelled version answered its main weakness, the long deployment into firing.

Rather for more experienced modelers. The extensive photo-etch, the detail of the engine and the choice of firing or travel position call for planning and a steady hand.
