About product

British Heavy Tank Mk.V Male in 1:35 scale from Meng

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British Mark V heavy tank in the Male version in 1:35 scale. The model captures the characteristic rhomboid shape with the tracks wrapping around the whole hull. The Male designation means that the main armament consists of guns placed in the side turrets (sponsons). The set is among the most detailed renderings of this type: it contains a full interior including the engine, click-together tracks, hatches that can be opened, an unditching beam and decals for several variants. Photo-etched parts are included. The model is intended to be assembled and painted.

The real subject

The Mark V was a British heavy tank of the First World War and the last large-series version of the original rhomboid design with which the British came up with the tank as a new weapon in 1916. Compared with the older Mark IV it brought a fundamental improvement: a new gearbox and steering, which made it possible for a single driver to control the tank. The Male version was armed with guns in the side sponsons (unlike the Female version with machine guns only). The Mark V was first used in action in 1918.

Building and painting tips

Glue the parts with liquid cement for plastic and the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Given the full interior it pays to plan the order of building and painting in advance - finish and paint the inside and the engine before you close the hull up; some of the detail can be left visible through the open hatches. Treat the surface with a primer. The large hull sides and the tracks are rewarding for a patina: washes will bring out the rivets and the texture, and pigments and mud effects will underline the trench service of the real subject.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of First World War equipment and pioneering tanks
  • Modelers who will appreciate a full interior and an engine
  • Builders interested in rhomboid tanks
  • More experienced modelers working with an interior and photo-etched parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
