Why the markings are done with a decal

Helmet insignia were in reality a few centimeters across, which in 1:35 scale works out to a patch smaller than a millimeter. Painting such a detail on a curved surface is a lottery even for an experienced modeler, whereas a decal gives a crisp, symmetrical result at the first attempt. On top of that, once dry the markings can be toned down with weathering and blended in with their surroundings so that they do not read as a sticker. If you are building a scene from the later part of the war, bear in mind that helmets were then issued without side insignia, so use the markings sparingly.

Recommended procedure

• Paint the helmet and polish the area under the decal with gloss clear.
• Soak the decal in lukewarm water, lift it off the backing and transfer it with a soft brush.
• On a curved surface a decal softener helps.
• Finally unify the surface with matte clear and add dust or light scuffing.
