This plastic kit in 1:35 scale from Meng captures one of the most unusual forms of the German light field car Kübelwagen — the half-track Type 155. Instead of rear wheels the vehicle has track modules and, at the front, skis, which were meant to let it move through snow and soft ground. The package combines classic injection-molded plastic with highly accurate 3D-printed track and ski modules, 3D-printed wheel parts and an MG34 machine gun with a well worked-out ammunition belt. Three color schemes are available. The assembled model measures roughly 111x57x65 mm, so it is a small but exceptionally striking piece for the display case or a diorama.
The Kübelwagen (Pkw.K1, in series production Type 82) was a German light field car built on Volkswagen mechanicals — simple, light, easy to repair and economical. Its weak point was getting through deep snow and mud, which was a fundamental problem on the Eastern Front. The Type 155 was an attempt to remove that weakness: the rear axle was replaced by track units and the front wheels were supplemented with skis. The trials took place in the autumn of 1942 and showed that the vehicle could indeed handle very heavy going, but at a cost that could not be justified — the top speed fell to roughly 8 km/h and consumption jumped to about 150 liters per 100 km. The Type 155 therefore never went into series production and remained at the stage of trial prototypes. That is exactly what makes it a spicy, out-of-the-ordinary subject that not everyone has in the display case.
Before you close up the hull, watch the running gear and the seating of the track modules — separate the 3D-printed parts from the supports carefully, sand them gently and degrease them before painting. Glue the small parts with thin cement for plastic run in by capillary action, and on the 3D-printed parts cyanoacrylate glue works well too. With a combination of plastic and printed parts a primer is practically compulsory. The painting can be done with an airbrush or a brush; for a snowy or muddy scene, washes into the recesses, dust pigments on the tracks and the skis and lightening of the upper surfaces for a fading effect all work well.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
