The KV-2 came about by setting a massive turret with a howitzer onto the chassis of a heavy tank, and the result was a colossus over three meters tall whose weight exceeded fifty tons. All that weight rested on a pair of wide tracks that had to keep the machine moving even on a muddy road. The width of the running track is therefore conspicuous on this family at first glance and is one of the things that set the KV apart from the medium tanks.
Unfortunately a model usually does not carry that quality through. The part from the box has its links joined solidly, the bend around the front wheel is made as a rigidly curved segment and the lower run lies like a plank. The weight the track carries therefore cannot be felt on the model, and yet on a machine this heavy that is the strongest impression a build can create.
The printed replacement carries the detail of the outer and the inner face of the link and can be fitted so that the upper run rests on the return rollers and drops slightly between them. The procedure: finish and paint the running gear completely first, lay the tracks on dry, adjust them into position and only then secure them with glue spot by spot. It is better to paint them after fitting so that the shadow in the gaps is not lost.
On such a robust machine the base is worth thinking about too. A heavy tank left a deep mark in soft ground, and a model set on a flat board looks lighter than the real thing was. It is enough to sink the lower edge into the base very slightly and the impression of weight is immediately different.
One practical note at the end: the upper run is best fixed spot by spot, step by step, rather than all at once. That way it can be corrected as you go so that the sag between the return rollers comes out the same on both sides.
