This injection-molded plastic kit from Miniart covers the British airfield bomb trolleys designated type C Mk. II. It is not a model of an aircraft or a combat vehicle but the support side of a bomber base: it was on these low trolleys that bombs were carried from the store to the ramps and under the aircraft. In 1:48 scale it is a rewarding companion that creates a lively scene around a finished bomber or fighter-bomber.
During the Second World War the Royal Air Force used standard trolleys that were hitched behind a tractor in trains of several units. The low platform made it possible to load a bomb and to run it right under an aircraft, where the ground crew lifted it into the rack with a winch. Type C was among the most widespread and accompanied practically the whole bomber offensive; it appeared in versions differing in the details of the frame and the drawbar. Without this equipment the hours of preparation for a raid would have stretched into a whole day, and yet it is a kind of equipment that was long missing from what modelers could buy.
The frames of the trolleys are slender, so cut the sprue gates carefully and dose the cement sparingly so as not to flood the fine details. Build on a flat board so that the train stands on all its wheels. Unify the base with a primer and apply the basic shade with an airbrush. The trolleys tended to be worn and dusty, so do not be afraid of metal showing through on the edges of the platform and of dust on the wheels. Leave the bombs stowed on a trolley in a different shade from the frame, which gives the scene depth.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
