The plastic kit 1:35 UH-1B Huey - Gunship from Trumpeter captures the armed form of the early Huey as it was used to escort troop-carrying helicopters.
Responsibility details are not available.
This kit in 1:35 scale represents the UH-1B in its armed form, known in English as a gunship. It is therefore the same basic subject as the transport Huey, but in the role where the helicopter does not carry infantry but protects it. The contents of the box, the number of parts and the mix of armament inside are given in the enclosed instructions and on the box itself.
Armed Hueys grew out of a practical need: transport helicopters heading for a landing zone needed someone to suppress the fire around it, and the only machine that could keep up with them in speed and range was another Huey. The UH-1B therefore began to be fitted with machine gun mounts on the sides of the fuselage and rocket pods on short pylons, while the side doors stayed manned by gunners. The improvisation worked so well that a whole doctrine of helicopter fire support grew out of it, later taken over by machines built for the combat role from the start. It is in this form that the UH-1B is at its most striking, and it is told apart from the clean transport version at a glance.
What decides the model most is the interior with its open doors and cleanly seated armament: dry-check the pylons and mounts so that they sit symmetrically and in line. Mask the glazing and paint it together with the fuselage. Last come the soot marks from the guns and the rocket pods, dust on the underside and wear where the crew stepped in.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
