The Douglas A-20 Havoc was an American twin-engine combat aircraft with radial engines and nosewheel landing gear. During the Second World War it served as a light bomber and as an attack machine for low-level strikes on ground targets. The A-20C version followed on from the family exported under the DB-7B designation and entered service with several Allied air forces.
The set brings colored three-dimensional elements for the interior spaces of the aircraft, which replace the smooth surface of the kit parts. The instrument panels, the control panels, the seat belts and the side walls have printed relief and come ready in color, so masking and hand painting of the small dials fall away. The shapes follow the parts of the HK Models kits.
The elements are carried on decal paper and have no adhesive layer of their own: the element is cut from the sheet, dipped in lukewarm water for about 15 seconds and slid off the paper into place. Do not use a decal softener or a decal fixer, as the chemicals attack the printed resin. The surface must be clean and smooth and is best coated with gloss varnish (Future or Klear, Tamiya X-22), so sand the molded detail flat where the element will sit. Cut the elements out with a sharp blade close to the edge and work with tweezers and a wooden stick so that the relief is not crushed; on a broken-up spot a drop of cyanoacrylate glue helps. The colored surface is not painted over; a matte varnish can go on once the assembly is finished.
It will be appreciated by the modeler who wants the interior convincingly filled under a large canopy without the laborious painting of every dial on its own. Even someone taking on a detailed interior for the first time will manage it, because it calls for no bending of photo-etch and no work with a size zero brush. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
