A kit of the post-war Czechoslovak Avia S-199 fighter in the version with the ERLA canopy, in 1:48 scale from Eduard. It is a hybrid edition that joins injection-molded plastic parts (fuselage, wings, propeller, canopies, control surfaces, landing flaps and clear parts) with 3D-printed detail (cockpit, landing gear bays and wheels, exhausts, gun barrels). The package includes painting masks and decals for 6 color schemes. The combination of technologies puts slightly higher demands on care when cleaning up the 3D parts.
The Avia S-199 was a post-war Czechoslovak fighter that Avia built from components of the German Messerschmitt Bf 109G. Because the stocks of the original DB 605 engines had been destroyed, the airframe received the Junkers Jumo 211 bomber engine with a coarse propeller. That worsened handling, above all on takeoff and landing, and the machine earned the nickname Mezek, meaning mule. The S-199 became famous as the first fighter aircraft of the Israeli Air Force in 1948 and also served in the Czechoslovak Air Force.
Separate the 3D-printed parts carefully from their supports and remove any residue before gluing; cyanoacrylate is the right choice for joining them to plastic. Glue the plastic parts with a thin modeling cement and sand the joints. Before painting apply a primer, which evens out the surface of plastic and resin alike. The supplied masks make it easy to spray the framing of the ERLA canopy cleanly; the camouflage and the markings are finished with an airbrush and a final patina.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
