Responsibility details are not available.
This injection-molded plastic kit from Hobby Boss captures the carrier fighter Grumman F4F Wildcat in the F4F-3 version, in its early production form. The 1:48 scale is the most common one for carrier fighters of the Second World War, and the model goes well with other machines of the same period. In the box there is a plastic kit to be glued and painted.
At the start of the war the Wildcat was the main carrier fighter of the US Navy and the Marine Corps. It was powered by the air-cooled two-row Pratt & Whitney R-1830 radial engine with a two-stage supercharger, which gave it decent performance at altitude as well. The F4F-3 version still had a fixed, non-folding wing; the folding mechanism came only with the later versions. The aircraft was not more agile than its Japanese opponents, but it was strong and tough, and with the right tactics it could hold its own against better machines. It was the F4F-3 that bore the brunt of the fighting in the first year of the war in the Pacific.
The Wildcat has a noticeably narrow fuselage and a wide engine cowling, so the seating of the engine and the cowling decides the overall impression. Finish the cockpit interior before closing up the fuselage and mask the glazing frames with tape. The landing gear retracting into the fuselage is small and fragile, so add it only after painting. Early naval schemes tended to be simple, which makes fine weathering, emphasis on the engraved lines and light rub-through at the wing root where the pilot climbed aboard stand out all the more. Lay a gloss coat before the decals.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
