A small animal figure in 1:48 scale from Firma49. It belongs to a wider range of farm and domestic animals that the brand offers in three scales in parallel; this item is the version for 1:48 scale, that is, for aircraft models and smaller military scenes. It is not a kit and not a model of equipment: it is a standalone scenic accessory supplied unpainted.
Animals do a lot of work in a diorama for very little space. A goat by the wall of a farm, in a yard or beside a field track gives a scene a civilian character at once and also serves as a guide to scale from which the viewer reads the size of the surrounding equipment. In 1:48 scale the figure really is small, so placing and painting decide the result more than the amount of detail. It works well to give the animal a clear role in the scene: let it be grazing at something, tethered to something or watching something.
First wash the casting in warm water with detergent and let it dry so that the paint holds. Cut the casting block off with a sharp scalpel and sand the area with fine sandpaper. Apply a thin primer. Do not paint the coat hair by hair at this scale: a base tone, a dark wash into the recesses and dry brushing in a lighter shade over the back and the edges work well. Do the eyes and the horns with a fine brush at the very end. A flat varnish evens the surface out and takes the plastic look off the animal.
The figure is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue, a base and other elements of a scene are not included in the package.
