A pair of Mark 77 incendiary bombs in the Mod.4 and Mod.5 versions, 1:48 scale. An accessory for attack and strike aircraft of the US Air Force and the Marine Corps.
Responsibility details are not available.
A thin-walled tank with no tail surfaces is among the most easily recognized armament of American strike aircraft. The filling was a thickened fuel mixture and the bomb was dropped from a very low altitude, so that on impact it spread into a long swath. That is exactly why it has the shape of a smooth body with a pair of suspension lugs on top and without any stabilizing arrangement, which would have no time to work on a low pass.
The two versions differ in the size of the tank and the volume of the filling, and the newer one stayed in service considerably longer. There are two pieces in the set, which matches the typical load on the inner pylons, where incendiary bombs were carried in pairs.
In 1:48 scale the castings are small enough that it is enough to separate the sprue gate with a razor saw and go over the area with a sanding sponge. The surface of the tank was smooth and glossy, which is a welcome opportunity for a gloss varnish with a light mist of exhaust staining on the underside of the fuselage. The lettering and the bands were usually near the nose, so a thin strip of masking tape does a better job than a free hand.
The armament alone does not make a build; you choose the aircraft kit you need according to the particular unit and period.
Photographs from combat operations show incendiary stores together with ordinary bombs and pods of unguided rockets, so a mixed load under the wings is not the builder's license but documented practice. On Marine Corps aircraft two incendiary tanks were also often carried symmetrically side by side.
