MiG-29 Fulcrum — air intakes, resin 1:48 (Quickboost / Aires)

This product is not an aircraft model. It is a replacement part in cast resin that replaces the air intakes on the kit of the MiG-29 Fulcrum fighter in 1:48 scale from Great Wall Hobby. On the Fulcrum the intakes are one of the most characteristic parts of the airframe — their shape, the crispness of the leading edge and what is visible inside make a great difference to how the model looks from the front.

What the accessory solves

A plastic intake tends to be a compromise: the walls must not be too thin if they are to be molded, and the duct often ends a few millimeters behind the opening with nothing, so you can see straight through into the model. A resin casting, by contrast, allows a thin-walled intake with a crisp edge and a suggested depth of duct, so that looking from the front you do not see into an empty fuselage shell. It also does away with the usual struggle of sanding and filling the seams inside the ducts, which is among the most tiresome parts of building a jet aircraft.

Working with resin

• Wash the castings in soapy water first, so that the mold release agent is gone.
• Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw, not by snapping them — resin cracks.
• Glue with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue); dry-fit the part in the fuselage before gluing.
• Paint the inside of the duct and varnish it smooth before gluing it in — after that you cannot get inside.
• Sand wet and with respiratory protection; resin dust is not to be inhaled.
