Ten markings for early Tigers of the heavy companies of Waffen-SS panzer regiments, from the fighting at Kharkov in the spring of 1943 to the winter of 1943 and 1944.
Responsibility details are not available.
In the spring of 1943 the three leading Waffen-SS divisions each received one heavy tank company equipped with Tigers, and their machines appeared at once in the counterattack at Kharkov. The numbering of these companies differed from that of the army battalions and used four-digit as well as special markings, which makes them a rewarding subject for a modeler. This sheet covers those units exclusively.
The markings take in the machines numbered 405 and 411 of the heavy company of the first panzer regiment at Kharkov in April 1943, the machines numbered 812, 821, 823 and 833 of the second regiment from the spring and summer of 1943, and the machine 911 of the third regiment from July 1943. Two options belong to the machines marked S04 and S14, the first of which was commanded at the turn of 1943 and 1944 by Michael Wittmann and the second by a commander named Kamrad.
Two of the later options fall into the winter period, when the crews painted the hull over with thinned whitewash or white paint. If you reproduce that layer, do not forget that the turret numbers were often painted over and then applied again over the white, so the order of the layers on a model decides how convincing the result is.
The item holds only a sheet in 1:48 scale.
Four-digit numbers are wider than the usual three-digit markings and take up considerably more room on the turret. Check in advance, therefore, whether they will fit between the hatch and the edge, especially if you are building a machine with extra equipment hung on the sides of the turret.
