About product

Masks for the splinter camouflage of the two-seat SK-37 in 1:48 scale

A masking set for painting the two-seat training version of the Saab 37 Viggen in 1:48 scale. The pattern is cut to the shape of the fuselage with its two cockpits, so that the camouflage fields line up even where the two-seater differs from the single-seat aircraft. It is not a kit but an aid for painting.

The real subject

The SK-37 was created as the training variant of the Viggen, with a second, higher-set instructor station. Because of it the shape of the fuselage spine changed and the aircraft was given a taller vertical tail in order to keep its stability. It flew as a conversion type for pilots moving on to the combat versions, and some of the aircraft were later rebuilt for training in an electronic warfare environment. Like the other Swedish aircraft it wore the multicolor splinter camouflage with sharp-edged fields, and putting that on a model without templates is among the most demanding things aircraft painting has to offer.

How to use the masks

Finish the model first, mask the glazing and even the surface out with a filler primer, because masks hold better and creep less on a smooth surface. Spray from the lightest shade to the darkest and give the paint time to cure between colors. Press the mask down above all around its perimeter, and repair any creep with a fine brush before the next step. Once the pattern is finished, let the whole finish settle; only then comes the gloss varnish under the decals and the final matte coat. The unused parts of the sheet come in handy for masking wheels or small cutouts.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building two-seat versions of the Viggen in 1:48 scale
  • Anyone interested in the Swedish Air Force of the Cold War
  • Those who want a faithful sharp-edged pattern without cutting by hand
  • Modelers working with an airbrush and several shades

This is an accessory to a model, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It has a second, higher-set instructor station, a differently shaped fuselage spine and a taller vertical tail. That is why it needs a camouflage scheme of its own.

It is recommended. A masked pattern depends on thin coats of paint laid down perpendicular to the surface, which neither a brush nor a rattle can do as cleanly.

Repair the creep with a fine brush right after the mask comes off, while the previous coat is still fresh. A small inaccuracy can be resprayed after masking again.
