An accessory for the outside of the Su-31 aerobatic aircraft in 1:48 scale. It covers the surface artwork and the framing of the canopy, that is what stays permanently in view on the model.
Responsibility details are not available.
Once the canopy is closed, most of the work done inside disappears behind the glass. What stays is the framing of the canopy and the surface artwork around it, and it is those that then carry the whole impression of the model. On the aerobatic Su-31 that is doubly true, because the canopy is large and clear and stretches over much of the top of the fuselage. A frame painted inaccurately or laid on thickly gives away haste at once.
The classic route means cutting strips of masking tape, sticking them along the curved edges and hoping that the paint does not creep under. On curved glass that is a job for several attempts. Printed framing is instead settled on like a decal, it holds a crisp edge even around a bend and it does not build up the thickness of the glass the way several coats of paint do. The surface artwork in the same set then adds the panel lines and the small markings on the fuselage.
It pays off every time the model is built with the canopy closed, that is at the moment when interior equipment gives the least return. Anyone who is planning an open canopy and a full cockpit, on the other hand, should take this set as a complement to the interior, not as a replacement for it. The two together give an aircraft whose inside and outside are equally well done.
