1:48 US P-61B Black Widow is an injection-molded plastic kit of the later production version of the American Northrop night fighter from Hobby Boss.
Responsibility details are not available.
A plastic kit of the twin-boom Northrop P-61 night fighter in the B version, the form that followed on from the first production machines. Hobby Boss has tooled the Black Widow as a family of boxings split by production version, and this one covers the middle and most numerous part of the run. The 1:48 scale allows the engine nacelles and the central nacelle with the cockpit to be worked out in fine detail.
The Northrop P-61 was the first American aircraft designed from the outset for night combat, with airborne radar in the nose. Two Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engines gave it enough power to carry the bulky equipment and the heavy 20 mm cannon armament in the belly of the central nacelle. The B version differed from the early form mainly in its lengthened nose and equipment changes, and the later production blocks added external racks. It was deployed in the Pacific and over western Europe in the closing stage of the Second World War.
The tail booms and their joints to the wing deserve a dry fit, otherwise the model easily picks up an unwanted twist. An all-black night finish puts the quality of the surface on show, so sanding and a filler primer pay off more than on an ordinary camouflaged aircraft. Lighten the panels slightly so that the model does not lose its modeling depth, and lay the decals over a gloss intermediate coat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
