About product

USS Arizona BB-39 (1941), 1:700 (Hobby Boss)

Injection-molded plastic model of the American battleship USS Arizona (BB-39) as she appeared in 1941, in the small 1:700 scale, from Hobby Boss. The small 1:700 scale is popular for warship collections – the model captures the ship's characteristic silhouette with main-caliber gun turrets and lattice masts from the period before she was sunk.

The real subject

The USS Arizona was an American Pennsylvania-class battleship commissioned in 1916. Her main armament comprised twelve 356 mm (14-inch) guns in four turrets. The ship became a symbol of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, in which she was sunk with heavy loss of life after a hit ignited the forward magazines. The wreck remains in place as a war memorial. The 1941 fit-out depicts the ship as she looked in the last months of her service.

Building and painting tips

With ships, assemble the hull first and clean up the seams along the keel; depending on the version, this may be a full-hull model or a waterline model for display on a stand or set into a base representing the sea surface. It is worth painting the deck and superstructure separately, and highlighting the wooden deck surfaces with a subtle wash. Glue the gun turrets and masts with a thin liquid cement for plastic; the finest parts (booms, boats, railings) call for care. If the package or an aftermarket set includes photo-etched parts, etched railings and ladders will noticeably boost realism. The finished model looks good on the supplied base or your own stand.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of warships and battleships in 1:700 scale
  • Anyone interested in US Navy history and the attack on Pearl Harbor
  • Modelers who prefer smaller, display-case-friendly models

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
