DFS-230A 1:72 – the German assault glider (RS Models)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the German military glider DFS-230A in 1:72 scale from the Czech maker RS Models. The subject is a cargo and assault glider with no engine of its own, which reached the battlefield under tow behind a tug aircraft. This edition offers a decal scheme with the matching period markings.

The real subject

The DFS 230 was a German transport glider of the Second World War. It had no engine at all – a tug aircraft pulled it to the target, and after release it glided silently and landed right in the area of the operation. It could carry a group of soldiers with their equipment and made its name above all in daring airborne operations, such as the capture of the fortress of Eben-Emael in 1940 or the rescue of Mussolini from the Gran Sasso in 1943.

Building and painting tips

As with short-run kits, clean the parts up carefully first and dry-fit them. Glue with cement for plastic and the fine parts with super glue; on a glider, take care over the fragile fabric-covered tube structure of the fuselage. Paint the interior and seats before closing up the fuselage. Build the finish with an airbrush over a primer and take care to place the period markings correctly according to the instructions; a matte clear coat at the end brings out the fabric surface.
