The small American-built escort carriers were created from the hulls of merchant ships and tankers and carried only a few dozen aircraft. The Wildcat in the FM-2 version was tailor-made for them: a short take-off run, a good field of view and the ability to operate even in poor weather. The six finishes on this sheet in 1:72 scale come from several such decks.
The machine of VC-99 from the ship Gambier Bay carries particular historical weight: this ship was sunk by Japanese surface gunfire in the Battle off Samar in October 1944 and is the only American aircraft carrier destroyed in that way. For two of the aircraft the pilot is named as well, and for one of them even the serial number.
The blue-gray naval finish shows through under white numerals easily, so it is a good idea to apply a gloss layer under the decal and to check the numerals against the light once they are dry. The small lettering of the name of the aircraft carrier is the most delicate part of the artwork, so handle the sheet in the dry and cut with a sharp knife. The letter markings on the tail surfaces changed with these squadrons even in the course of a single deployment, so a photograph of the particular aircraft tends to be a more reliable guide than a general table of markings. The model is supplied separately.
