About product

The men at the machine

A tank crew differed from the infantry at first glance. A short double-breasted jacket without a belt, which nothing caught on the inside of the fighting compartment, a soft cap instead of a helmet, headphones with a throat microphone and a pistol as the only personal weapon. A combat situation, however, also meant moments when the crew left the machine: repairing a track under fire, recovering a bogged-down vehicle, tending to a wounded man or escaping from a burning tank. It is precisely such postures that turn a model of a vehicle into a scene with a story, because a tank on its own without people looks like an exhibit.

The color of the plastic is not just cosmetic

Castings of small figures tend to be made of material colored in the mass, and the shade differs considerably between individual sets. That has a practical effect on painting: a light ground draws brightness out of a color, a dark one dulls it, and the same shade looks like two different colors on two different grounds.

How to secure the same results

The solution is simple and reliable: unify the ground with a neutral base coat, usually gray. Gray distorts neither warm nor cool shades and suits a light as well as a dark final color. With a black jacket it makes sense to choose a darker base coat and build the color by lighting the edges, because black laid on at full strength in a small scale swallows all the relief.

It also helps to decide in advance how many figures will be visible in full in the final scene. A man leaning out of a hatch needs only his upper half worked out carefully, so time and paint can be concentrated where the eye really looks.

FAQ

Yes. A light ground brightens the paint laid over it, a dark one dulls it, so the same shade works out differently every time. A unifying neutral base coat removes that difference.

A gray one, because it distorts neither warm nor cool shades and works under light as well as dark colors. With very dark dress a somewhat darker base coat pays off.

Never with full black. At this size it absorbs all the relief. It is better to start from a dark gray and gradually light the edges of the folds, so that the shape stays legible.

It depends on the particular kit and on the posture of the casting. With figures in a small scale the lower part of the body is often reworked so that the figure seats into the opening.
