Reskit offers this pod as a store for models of combat aircraft in 1:72 scale. The designation GPU-5/A belongs to an American 30 mm weapon pod which is hung on an outer pylon and adds to the onboard armament a weapon able to act against armored targets. The package contains no aircraft; the pod is fitted to a model obtained separately.

Where the store comes into its own

Models of tactical aircraft are often built with empty or monotonously loaded pylons, because kits contain only a basic set of stores. A weapon pod is therefore a rewarding way to liven up the configuration and at the same time to give the model a clear message about the role the machine filled. In 1:72 scale, moreover, a separately produced part tends to be crisper than a comparable piece divided by the parting line of an injection mold.

What the GPU-5/A is

It is an American pod with a multi-barrel 30 mm cannon, meant to be carried under an aircraft that does not have such a weapon built in. Its use is linked with strikes on ground targets and with support of troops in close contact. In practice its use was rather limited, which makes it all the more interesting as a subject for a model.

On building

• Check that the pylon on the model matches the mounting of the pod.
• Fit the store only after the underside of the fuselage and the wings have been finished.
• Leave the muzzles of the barrels darker, because on the real subject they tend to be sooted.
• Handle the markings only after the base coat of finish.
