The I.A.R. 80 is a single-seat fighter of Romanian design and Romanian manufacture. It appeared at the end of the 1930s and combined a new all-metal fuselage with tail surfaces and parts of the wing derived from a Polish fighter built under license. It was powered by the I.A.R. K14 two-row fourteen-cylinder radial engine, built under license from a French design. It entered combat from 1941 on the Eastern Front, where it was one of the main fighter types of the Romanian Air Force.
It is a plastic kit in 1:72 scale for gluing and painting. It matches the early configuration of the aircraft, which differed from later batches in the shape of the fuselage and in lighter machine gun armament. The model is supplied unassembled; the parts have to be separated from the sprues, cleaned up and joined with cement for polystyrene.
In 1:72 scale it pays to finish the cockpit before you close the fuselage and to check the fit of the canopy straight away. The radial engine is visible through the cowling, and a dark base with lightened cylinder edges gives it depth. Romanian machines carried striking recognition markings, so it is worth applying their decals over a gloss base.
The kit will appeal to anyone interested in less usual Eastern Front types and in the aircraft of smaller air forces. In scope the build suits modelers with basic experience; only the small landing gear parts are more demanding. Paints, glue and other equipment are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
