Xtradecal 1:72 decals for the Phantom FG.1 and FGR.2 are a waterslide sheet meant for modelers who want to finish a British Phantom differently from the markings in the box.
Responsibility details are not available.
The British Xtradecal brand issued this sheet as the second part of its extensive Phantom series. It is aimed at builders of 1:72 models for whom the markings enclosed with a kit are not enough and who want control of the final form of the machine themselves. The individual elements are cut from the carrier film piece by piece, as is usual with waterslide decals.
The FG.1 version, with the factory designation F-4K, and the FGR.2, alias F-4M, were not mere copies of the American original. They received Rolls-Royce Spey turbofans with a substantially greater air flow, and because of them the maker had to widen the rear part of the fuselage and enlarge the intakes. The naval FG.1 also had an extending nose leg, so that it reached a greater angle of attack on a carrier catapult. The British Phantom therefore looks bulkier, and during a build that difference shows well even in a small scale.
First clear-coat the area under the markings with gloss varnish, otherwise a silvery veil will appear around the film. Dip the element in lukewarm water for a few seconds, lay it on absorbent paper and let it soften. Only then slide it onto the model and press the excess water out with a soft sponge from the center toward the edges.
The package consists of a printed sheet, and a plastic model is obtained separately.
