This substantial drop tank is one of the most characteristic stores of the MiG-25. Reskit offers it as a 3D printed accessory in 1:72 scale; the package holds one piece and the subject is a tank of 5280 liters. The smooth printed surface is ready for painting practically as soon as the supports are separated and it is lightly sanded.
The MiG-25 came about as an interceptor and reconnaissance machine able to operate at altitudes above twenty kilometers at speeds approaching three times the speed of sound. Its two huge engines had a matching thirst, though, so on transit flights and reconnaissance missions the machines carried a large drop tank under the fuselage, which markedly extended the fuel load and the range. Without that store the underside of the machine looks surprisingly empty, while with it a model gains bulk at once.
Paint the tank together with the underside of the model, so that it blends in tone with the airframe; Soviet machines tended to have their lower surfaces in light gray-blue shades. Try the fit against the fuselage dry and fill any gap only once it is glued on. A fine brownish wash around the mounting supports the impression of everyday service.
