Academy offers the American strategic reconnaissance aircraft SR-71 in this box. Even in 1:72 scale it is a sizeable piece, because the real aircraft was over thirty-two meters long and the finished model follows suit in size.
The Blackbird was created in the 1960s in the development group known as Skunk Works under the leadership of Clarence Johnson. An airframe of titanium alloys withstood temperatures that would have destroyed an aluminum structure, and a pair of engines with movable cones in the intakes allowed sustained flight above three times the speed of sound. It flew reconnaissance missions from altitudes of around twenty-five kilometers, where it was practically untouchable, and it left US Air Force service in the 1990s. The aircraft operated from Okinawa and from the British Isles among other places.
The Blackbird's dark finish is not black but rather a very dark gray with a bluish cast; a pure black flattens the model visually and hides detail. The large fuselage areas and the blended transitions of the lifting surfaces call for patient filling. Pick out the insides of the intakes and the nozzles with metallic shades, because that is where the viewer's eye stops first.
The goods are supplied unassembled and unpainted; the modeler buys the glue and paints needed separately.
