An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese high-altitude fighter prototype Tachikawa Ki-94-II in 1:72 scale from RS Models. It is a short-run kit with a finely engraved surface structure, complemented by resin parts — the engine and part of the oil cooler. The instructions allow both the prototype and the intended production form to be built; they differ in the propeller and in the length of the lower cooler.
The Ki-94-II was a single-seat high-altitude fighter developed for the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force at the end of the Second World War. It was powered by a supercharged Nakajima eighteen-cylinder radial of around 2400 horsepower and had a pressurized cabin so that it could operate at great altitude against B-29 bomber raids. The end of the war stopped its construction — the first prototype was preparing to fly and the second stayed unfinished, so the aircraft never took to the air.
A short-run kit is one a more experienced modeler will appreciate: the parts usually need cleaning of casting remains and careful dry-fitting. Bond the plastic parts with liquid modeling cement and the resin parts with super glue (cyanoacrylate) after washing off the mold release agent. Even the base out with a primer and lay the paint on with an airbrush. On prototypes both a polished metal finish and green camouflage suggest themselves — because it is a machine that was never completed, treat the color schemes as illustrative.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
