About product

Revell 382 Wood brown - Enamel Modeling Paint, 14 ml

Revell 382 Wood brown is a modeling paint, it is not a kit. It belongs to the Revell Email Color range, that is it is a synthetic enamel paint on a solvent base, not an acrylic. The shade is a warm wood brown (the maker lists it with a reference to RAL 8001) with a silk sheen. The volume of the bottle is 14 ml.

Use - specifically on wood

  • Ship decks - deck planks, bridges, boats and the wooden sheathing of a hull.
  • Wooden propellers of aircraft of the First World War and the interwar period.
  • Stocks and handguards of weapons on figures and on the armament of vehicles.
  • Crates, barrels, furniture and structural elements for dioramas.
  • Interiors of old aircraft - wooden frames, floors and plywood skinning.

381 Brown or 382 Wood brown?

This is the most common question. 381 Brown is an earthy, dirty brown for mud, soil, leather, gear and the brown patches of camouflages. 382 Wood brown has a warmer, woody undertone and is built directly for imitating wood. If you want a deck or a stock, reach for 382; if you want mud on tracks, for 381. The two complement each other splendidly, though - see the tip below.

Tip: wood does not come about in one coat

A convincing wood look is always the result of layering, not of a single coat. The proven procedure: first an even base in the shade 382, then, once it has dried, a darker glaze or wash (381 Brown or a brown oil wash serves well for exactly this) drawn in the direction of the grain, that is along the planks, not across them. Finally the edges can be picked out with a dry brush in a lighter tone. The result is a drawing of growth rings and a depth that a uniform coat will never give.

Who it is for

For builders of ships, of aircraft from the era of wood and fabric, of figures and of dioramas who work with enamel paints. The paint is thinned with Revell Color Mix thinner or with mineral spirits - never with water.

Warning: a flammable liquid. The vapors can irritate the airways, so work with good ventilation and use respiratory protection when spraying with an airbrush. Keep out of the reach of children and away from sources of ignition.

FAQ

For imitating wood - ship decks, propellers, weapon stocks, crates, wooden interiors - you want 382 Wood brown with its warm woody undertone. For soil, mud, leather, gear and earthy camouflages 381 Brown is more suitable. Having both is ideal, because 381 serves excellently as a darker glaze over a base of 382.

No. A uniform coat looks like brown plastic. Apply 382 as a base, add a darker glaze or wash drawn in the direction of the grain once it has dried, and pick the edges out with a dry brush if you like. Only layering gives the drawing and the depth.

Silk, that is semigloss. For a varnished deck it can be drawn over with gloss varnish, for weathered wood with a matte one instead.

With the thinner for enamel paints Revell Color Mix, or with mineral spirits. Water will not do, because this is a solvent-based enamel paint.
