A dark red tone with a brown underside. For car bodies, leather and deep red surfaces.

A shade from the family of dark reds with a brown underside, that is the one everyday speech calls wine red. It is neither a signal red nor a rusty brown; it lies between them and reads as deep and calm. On models it finds use on older car bodies and interiors, on upholstery, on a leather saddle and wherever red is meant to look expensive rather than loud.
A dark tone forgives little: on a smooth car body it shows every unevenness, while in folds and on broken-up parts it creates a convincing shadow all by itself. It pays to apply it onto a smoothly sanded and degreased surface and to build the transitions by lightening the upper surfaces rather than by adding black into the depths.
The paint is water-thinnable and free of the smell of solvents, so it can be worked with even in a lived-in room. It is intended primarily for spraying; stir the contents until the difference between the thicker bottom and the thinner top is gone.
At the top is the number of the shade in a frame, below it the name of the paint. The left side states how the surface behaves toward light, the right the field the shade belongs to. Colors tied to period hardware add the country and a range of years.
Dark reds get along well with a small part of brown and with a drop of blue: the first warms them into old paintwork, the second shifts them toward a cool wine. Anyone looking for a particular shade of a real subject will save work by trying the mix out first on a piece of scrap plastic. A dried test looks different from a wet drop in the cup.
