A translucent blue from the Gunze Acrysion acrylic range. A tinting paint for position lights, instrument covers and clear parts.

Translucent paints do not cover, they filter. Light passes through them, reflects off the base and comes back colored, so the result depends on what lies underneath. That is exactly why they suit parts that are meant to read as glass, acrylic or colored optics.
They are most often aimed at the position and formation lights of aircraft, at beacons and warning lamps, at the covers of instruments and displays, at headlight lenses and at the clear parts of robot kits. Silver is usually laid underneath, which multiplies the reflectivity and lights up even an item as small as a wingtip light.
The depth is governed by the number of coats. One light pass gives a faint cast, three or four produce dark blue glass. The paint is thinned with water or with Acrysion Thinner, and Acrysion Tool Cleaner serves for rinsing out tools; when working on a small area it pays to thin it more and spray from a greater distance.
On clear parts the cleanliness of the surface is crucial. A fingerprint or dust cannot be hidden under a translucent layer and will remain permanently visible once dry, which is why the parts are washed before spraying and picked up only through a glove or a piece of paper. A casting freed of grease also takes the coat evenly, so no edges of differing depth appear on it.
