Yellow and its treacherous coverage

Of all the basic tones it is yellow that gives modelers the most trouble. The pigment lets light through, so laid straight onto dark plastic or over a gray base it turns greenish and loses its brightness. The remedy has always been the same: first a white or light gray base, then two or three translucent coats, and only the last of them decides the strength of the shade. Patience pays off, because a bright yellow area is among the things a viewer notices first on a finished model. With this tone the difference between a successful and a poor area is visible right across a display case.

Its uses are wide: recognition stripes on engine covers and wingtips, construction and airfield equipment, warning areas, sports cars and civil machines. Thinned down, it also serves to lighten other colors without whitening them the way white does. Mixed with gray or brown it gives muted field tones suitable for wood and for dusty surfaces.

Thinning and spraying

The paint is acrylic and is thinned with water; for a finer spray you can reach for the thinner from the same range. The manufacturer has prepared it for spraying with a gun, so it pays to lower the pressure and come only close enough to the surface for the coat not to stay grainy.

Let a dry area cure thoroughly before masking, otherwise the tape will pull the soft film off together with what is under it. Wipe the thread before closing the bottle, so that next time the cap is not stuck fast. Rinse the nozzle immediately after spraying, otherwise a film will settle in it that changes the shape of the spray.
