Crimson - a crimson red in a dense acrylic

Crimson is a bottled acrylic from the Artistic Dense range, that is the dense paints built for work with a brush on figures. The thinner is water or acrylic thinner. You will find the same name with oil paints, inks and weathering effects as well — but those are different kinds of goods with different chemistry and a different procedure; this is an acrylic paint in a bottle. The shade is crimson: a deep red with a hint of a blue undertone, not an orange signal red.

Where the shade belongs

Crimson is the classic color of cloth. It falls well on cloaks, the wool cloth of uniforms, facings, pennants, upholstery and on fantasy garments, where red is to look expensive and rich. It gives the best results by layering: the base in full color, the shadow broken with a darker red or with brown and the highlights built by adding a warmer red, not white — that shifts crimson quickly toward pink. Thinned, it works as a glaze with which an already finished red area can be unified or deepened.

How to work with it

• A glaze is the strongest tool with reds: a thin layer drawn over a dried base deepens the tone without flooding the folds.
• Build a rich red up on a lighter surface; over a dark base count on more layers and let each one dry properly.
• Mix highlights with orange or a warmer red and shadows with brown or dark violet — black dirties a red.
• Red pigments can run into a surrounding light area, so work with a drier brush and with less paint.
