Unlike loose materials, what you get here is real plant fiber, only dyed to a shade a modeler can use. The manufacturer explicitly states that this is a natural product with a true color, and gives the fiber length as two and a half inches, that is 5.08 cm. The bag weighs 8 g, which given the fineness of the fiber is a surprisingly large volume. The fibers are also springy, so a tuft finds a natural shape by itself once planted and does not stay stiffly upright.
The color matches dried grass at the end of summer, stubble after the harvest, or the untended margins of field tracks. It comes into play wherever a landscape should look dry and baked, and it is rewarding as a companion to green growth as well, because a few dry stalks among the green break up a monotonous area. In larger scales it is worth shortening the fibers, since at full length they stand for growth over a meter high. Shortening is done with scissors on the finished tuft, never on a loose bundle.
A pinch of fibers is taken from the bundle, aligned at one end, and the lower part is dipped in glue. The tuft is then pushed into a prepared hole or pressed against the surface, and once dry it is trimmed to the required height with sharp scissors. Trim only after it has dried, otherwise the fibers splay out and the tuft loses its shape.
