R-73 guided missile in 1:32 scale from Temp Models

The set brings a 3D printed replica of the R-73 guided missile in 1:32 scale from Temp Models. It is not a model of an aircraft but underwing armament with which you complete a finished build. The printed rendition gives the crisper edges of the stabilizing and control surfaces and finer surface detail than injection-molded plastic offers, and above all it does without a seam line across the whole body of the missile.

The real subject

The R-73 is a Soviet and Russian short-range air-to-air missile with infrared guidance. That is exactly how the manufacturer describes it. Against the older missiles of this category it can be aimed at a target far off the flight axis and it stands out for its agility, helped by the control surfaces in the nose and the aerodynamic strakes behind them. It belongs to the armament of modern Russian fighters and on a model it is most often on the wingtip pylons.

Building and painting tips

The parts are printed from resin and are held only by thin supports. Cut them off with a sharp scalpel as close to the part as possible, sand the marks down with fine sandpaper and protect your airways while sanding. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Paint holds longer on a smooth print if you lay a thin coat of primer under it. Paint the underwing weapons separately and glue them onto the model only after the landing gear and the cockpit are finished.
