A gray matching number 36270 of the American Federal Standard. A water-based modeling acrylic in a ten-milliliter bottle, usable in a gun and under a brush alike.

From the 1970s onwards, low-visibility gray camouflage pushed colorful patterns off the combat aircraft of the United States. Within those schemes the shade numbered 36270 plays the darker of the two main roles: above it is complemented by a still darker tone and below by a lighter one, so that the silhouette of the machine blends with the sky and with the terrain beneath it and its distance is harder to judge.
The designation itself comes from the American standard for coatings, in which the first digit gives the degree of sheen and the remaining four the particular shade. The number is carried above all by light fighters and some trainer types, but it also appears on ground vehicles and on aircrew equipment, so the bottle will find use across fields.
On large single-color wings it helps to add a drop of white to the paint and to lighten the center of each panel. The difference should be barely noticeable; only after a unifying pass in the original tone does the impression arise that the surface has been dried out by sun and service. The procedure takes repeating too, only let the surface cool and dry completely between rounds.
It is a good idea to compare the degree of sheen with the label, because it differs between the individual numbers of this range and low-visibility finishes tend to be rather satin. The final impression will in any case be set by the overall clear coat on the model.
