About product

Copper with a metallic sheen

Metallic paints work differently from ordinary opaque shades. The metallic look is not created by pigment but by the tiny faces of reflective particles that settle parallel to the surface as the paint dries. The smoother the base, the more orderly they lie and the more the surface resembles polished metal. Over a rough base, by contrast, the impression is flat and grainy.

Before you start spraying

Metal particles settle to the bottom faster than ordinary pigment, so stir the contents thoroughly and again during work. Apply it thinly, as a heavy coat buries the particles and the sheen is lost. With a brush go in one direction and do not return into a tacky area, otherwise the settled layer is disturbed and streaks are left behind.

Where you meet copper on a model

Radiators and piping of historic machines, boilers and fittings of steam locomotives, cartridge cases, submarine components, roof coverings of buildings or brass accessories on figures. The shade can also be subdued with a thin brown glaze to give the impression of oxidized copper that has not been polished for years.

The dried metallic film is sensitive to rubbing, so a final clear coat is worth the effort.

Thinning and cleaning after a metallic shade

A metallic paint takes only moderate thinning; too thin a mix scatters the particles and the surface turns gray. Adjust the consistency carefully and rather add another light pass.

After spraying, clean the airbrush more thoroughly than usual. Metal particles settle in the needle, in the nozzle and in the air cap, and on your next job with an ordinary paint they come loose as glittering specks you will never get rid of. Finish the flush with a cleaner, not just water, and wipe the needle down on the outside with a cloth.

FAQ

Most often a flat or grainy base and too heavy a coat are to blame. Smooth the base and apply the paint thinly; the particles will then line up flat.

Yes, but work your strokes in one direction and do not return into a tacky area. Going over it again disturbs the settled particles and leaves streaks.

Overcoat the surface with a very thin brown or greenish glaze and wipe off the excess. It stays in the recesses and the surface takes on the look of oxidation.
