A Saturated Orange for an Airbrush and for a Brush

Number fourteen in the Hobby Color range belongs to a pronounced orange. The package holds ten milliliters and it is a water-thinnable acrylic of the kind that suits plastic models, figures and small accessories. The binder contains no aggressive solvents, so it will not attack the surface of kit plastic.

Orange tends to be needed anywhere something has to be clearly visible. Towed targets, the warning stripes of rescue machines, floats, cones and the markings of airfield vehicles all call for it at full saturation. In civil aviation and automotive work it serves for painting extensive areas, while on military vehicles it is more for small warning elements and lettering.

A warm saturated tone covers markedly better if a light layer lies beneath it. A white or very light gray base makes the final color glow, whereas on dark gray plastic several passes are usually needed. It is applied in thin coats, which are allowed to dry between one another.

The contents have to be stirred right down to the bottom before work, otherwise the shade comes out weaker and covers worse. It is thinned with water or with the thinner from the same manufacturer, depending on how fine a spray is wanted. A brush takes a thicker consistency, whereas a gun needs the paint thinned roughly to the state of thin cream.

The saturation of the tone has its downside, because a pigment like this readily clings to the walls of the cup and inside the nozzle. It is therefore sensible to flush the gun out straight after spraying, while the residue is still wet. Dried orange comes off the needle and out of the channel considerably worse than cool shades.
