Gray gets used up in a modeling cabinet sooner than most colorful shades. It is used as a unifying base that evens out the differences between plastic, filler and photo-etch, as a tone for knocking back an over-saturated color and as the starting point for a whole range of mixes of your own. A neutral gray also reveals flaws in a surface before they show up under the final coat, when it is too late to fix them.
On its own it serves for weapons, for parts of running gear, for crates and lockers or for models on which gray is the machine's basic color. As an ingredient in a mix it softens saturation and shifts a shade into a realistic position, because colors exposed to sun and rain always differ from fresh paint.
The paint has to be stirred before work, so that the pigment returns from the bottom into the whole volume. For an airbrush it is thinned to a consistency at which the paint flows smoothly off the stirrer; with water it is wise to be careful and to reach for it mainly on absorbent bases, while on bare plastic the maker's own thinner works more reliably. The coats are laid thin and allowed to become tacky between one another.
It is a good idea to wipe the thread and the inside of the lid after every use. A dried crust on the thread eventually stops sealing, the contents evaporate and thicken until the paint turns into a paste. If that happens, thinner will save it; water alone restores the consistency only in part.
The bottle holds ten milliliters, that is an amount which, with sensible thinning, lasts for several kits.
