A light gray with a straw tint per standard BS4800 18B21, a water-based acrylic paint, ten-milliliter package.

The designation 18B21 from standard BS4800 covers a light gray with a warm yellowish undertone mixed in. The Royal Air Force (RAF) adopted it as it moved away from the older division of a dark upper and light lower fuselage toward all-over gray camouflage on supersonic types. The shade looks very light on a model, so every panel joint and shadow stands out on it.
Light tones cover worse than dark ones, so it pays to build them up in several thin coats rather than one heavy one. First unify the base, then apply the paint, and only at the end work on highlighting the seams. Patience pays off here; a heavy coat will fill in fine relief.
The paint needs to be mixed very thoroughly, or the light pigment stays at the bottom and the coat loses coverage. If you apply the shade with a brush, add a drying retarder so the stroke blends smoothly. The final surface can be flattened with the matte base the manufacturer offers separately.
The warm undertone only becomes apparent next to a purely neutral gray placed beside it. On a small sample the shade looks almost white, but over a whole fuselage it takes on exactly the color temperature it was created for. When photographing the finished model, use diffused light — a harsh source will blow out a light surface and the surface texture will disappear from the photo.
