Polyurethane Gloss Varnish from Vallejo is a clear gloss varnish based on polyurethane resin, thinned with water. It is not a paint and has no covering power — once dry it is transparent; it will not repaint or hide anything. It serves exclusively to protect and adjust the gloss of a finish that is already done. The main reason to reach for polyurethane specifically: these varnishes are noticeably harder and more durable than ordinary acrylic ones — they better withstand handling the model, abrasion and masking tape. The manufacturer also states UV resistance.

When gloss varnish is used

• Under decals. On a matte surface, air gets trapped under the decal film and a silvered ring forms around the motif — the decal silvers. A glossy, smooth base prevents that, which is why you varnish before applying decals.
• Before a wash and panel-line highlighting. On a glossy surface, excess wash wipes off cleanly; on a matte one it smears and leaves blotches.
• As final protection wherever you want a glossy surface — cars, motorcycles, lacquered-look models.
• Sequence of work: base color → gloss varnish → decals → gloss varnish → wash and panel lines → finally a matte varnish to even out the gloss (typical for military equipment).
• Applied with brush or airbrush; per the manufacturer it can also be sprayed undiluted through a 0.4 mm nozzle. Tools are cleaned with water.
