Hobby 2000 Precision Masking Tape 5 mm x 18 m is the widest of the precise masking tapes of the Precision range, a straight tape for sharp demarcation lines. A modeling tool, not a kit.

This roll from Hobby 2000 comes from the Precision range, that is from the straight and accurate branch of the line on a paper carrier. It serves for masking straight lines and sharp edges. The paper carrier does not stretch, so the tape keeps a straight run, and that is exactly why it starts to wrinkle on an arc. For rounded shapes Hobby 2000 has a separate range, Masking Tape For Curves, which can be stretched into an arc without rippling; in practice the two ranges complement each other on one model. The roll holds 18 m. It is a modeling tool, not a kit.
The difference is not that modeling tape sticks better; quite the opposite. Its tack is deliberately low and controlled, so that it does not tear off dried paint when peeled. The edge is cleanly cut, so paint does not get under it and the boundary stays sharp. And once removed, no adhesive residue is left on the surface that you would have to take off with solvent.
Once the tape is down, press it along the whole edge, as only that creates the tight seal that will not let paint underneath. Apply the paint in thin coats and peel the tape off slowly and at a sharp angle back over itself.
For modelers who need to mask longer straight sections quickly and reliably. Against the 4.5 mm variant the difference is half a millimeter, so they really are close and in practice you will use them interchangeably. There is no point in looking for a fundamental difference between them; there is a point in also having the flexible For Curves at hand for arcs.
