About product

SEA Camouflage FS 34079, Mr.Paint, the Aqua line

This is not a kit but a model paint. The name is misleading only in appearance: SEA here does not mean the sea but South East Asia. It refers to the tactical camouflage scheme of the US Air Force that appeared from the middle of the 1960s on machines over Vietnam and is still counted among the most iconic aircraft camouflages. FS 34079 is the dark forest green in it, the darkest shade of the upper surfaces.

The darkest color of the scheme

The camouflage combines two greens and a brown on the upper surfaces: this dark green FS 34079, the lighter medium green FS 34102 and the brown FS 30219. The fields are irregular and blend softly, and the two greens are close to each other in shade, as the scheme was meant to break up the silhouette of the aircraft against the jungle rather than create a sharp contrast. The underside of the machine is light gray, FS 36622; on aircraft for night operations and on gunships it was black instead of gray. In practice that means one thing: this green is one of four colors that only make sense together. Anyone building an F-4 Phantom II, an F-105 Thunderchief, an A-1 Skyraider, an F-100, an A-7 or a C-130 from Vietnam needs them all.

Chemistry: an Aqua line acrylic, not a lacquer

The Aqua line is a water-thinnable acrylic suitable for brush and airbrush. Watch out for one trap: the manufacturer offers exactly the same shade names in its lacquer (nitro) line as well, which is intended solely for the airbrush. You will not tell them apart by the name, only by the line. This paint is the acrylic one and it is thinned with water or with the acrylic thinner of the same line; nitro thinner does not belong in it.

Use

  • The darkest fields of the upper surfaces of American aircraft in the SEA scheme
  • Dark shades cover well, so they help after lighter colors and also suit the shading of panels
  • Make soft transitions freehand with an airbrush and sharp boundaries with a mask
  • Mix thoroughly before use and apply several thin coats
  • Overcoat with a gloss clear coat before decals and restore the flat surface at the end

Who the paint is for

For modelers who build American equipment from the Vietnam war and want a shade to the FS standard instead of an approximate green from an ordinary palette. On its own it will not paint the model, as the medium green, the brown and the light gray of the undersides belong with it.

A model paint, not a kit. A water-thinnable acrylic. Keep out of the reach of children and ensure ventilation and respiratory protection when spraying. Do not thin with nitro thinner.

FAQ

No. SEA is the abbreviation of South East Asia. It is the American camouflage scheme of the Vietnam war: two greens and a brown on the upper surfaces, light gray underneath. The name has nothing to do with the sea or with the navy.

Four. Besides this dark green FS 34079 also the medium green FS 34102, the brown FS 30219 and the light gray FS 36622 for the undersides. Machines for night operations had a black underside.

It belongs to the acrylic Aqua line, so it is water-thinnable and can be applied with a brush as well as an airbrush. The manufacturer has identical shade names in its lacquer (nitro) line too, which you will not tell from the acrylic by the name. It is thinned with water or with the acrylic thinner of the same line, never with nitro thinner.

Yes, the Aqua line is intended for the airbrush as well. The soft transitions of the SEA scheme are done freehand from a short distance at lower pressure; the consistency of the paint can be tuned with water or acrylic thinner.
