The designation FS 11105 belongs to the American Federal Standard 595, in which every shade is described by five digits. The first of them gives the sheen: a one means a gloss surface, a two semi-gloss, a three a matte finish. The second digit places the shade in a color group, a one meaning red tones, and the last three digits are sequential. The word DoT refers to the American Department of Transportation, which prescribes paints of this type for high-visibility markings. The result is a deep gloss red with a clearly given definition, not an arbitrary shade.
The paint comes into play wherever a red is meant to be bold and glossy: on markings, warning features, fire extinguishers, vehicle equipment or small interior details. Because it is a shade listed under an FS code, it pairs easily with other paints from the same system and there is no guessing whether the tone matches. On small areas the gloss shows even without a final varnish; on larger parts it pays to even the surface out.
The bottle has to be stirred thoroughly before use, as red pigments are particularly willing to settle at the bottom. It is applied in several thin coats on a clean, degreased surface. A deep red holds better and is more even over a light base; on bare dark plastic more coats tend to be needed. Thinning, cleaning the tools and the recommended spraying procedure follow the instructions from the manufacturer on the packaging.
