Rough Grey Pumice

Vallejo Rough Grey Pumice - a gray stony surface straight from the paste

This is not a paint but a modeling texture paste with a coarse filler. Compared with the light variant of the same range it has the advantage that the paste itself is already a neutral gray tone, so even without perfect overpainting it looks convincing as a stony road, a ballast bed or a crushed base. Even so, the final impression comes from the painting: the gray material is a base, not a goal.

Use

• apply it in sections and let each area dry, as a thick continuous layer dries slowly and can crack
• work the texture while the paste is still pliable; once dry, only sanding or adding more will help
• press ruts from wheels and tracks into the fresh layer with the model or with an impression of a track, not into a dried surface
• break the gray up with local toning, as a uniform area looks flat whatever its texture
• a dark wash brings out the gaps between the grains, and a dry brush picks out the edges of the stones
• finally add pigment so that the dust carries over from the terrain onto the wheels or the track of a vehicle

Who it is for

For diorama builders with a field track, a gravel quarry, a railroad bed or a stony slope, and for vehicle modelers who want a base with marks of passage. It also works well as a transition layer between rough terrain and a smooth part of a scene.

A water-based acrylic material with a filler. Wash the tools with water immediately after the work, as dried paste cannot be got out of the bristles. Store the container tightly closed and protect from frost. It is not meant for consumption or for the hands of small children.
