It is the shade of the Japanese naval gray of the Sasebo arsenal, the color of the hulls of Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) ships built and repaired at the Sasebo yard. Chemically it is a lacquer in a spray can: it forms a firm and even film with no need for an airbrush.
The Japanese naval arsenals each mixed their naval gray a little differently, so the tone of the hull varied according to where the ship was built. Sasebo is darker overall than the gray of the Kure (SJ01) arsenal. The two shades are easily confused, which is why it is essential to choose according to the particular subject: anyone building a ship from Sasebo needs this tone, and anyone with a ship from Kure reaches for SJ01. Without the right yard gray the model does not match reality.
A lacquer: it attacks untreated plastic and dissolves older enamel layers. Apply in a well-ventilated area, use a respirator and protect your skin and eyes. Highly flammable; keep away from sources of fire.
