A modeling paint from the Gunze Hobby Color range, product code H096. The name states a smoke blue tone and a gloss finish. The gloss is not only a question of looks: a smooth gloss surface is the best base under decals, because no air runs under the film and the edge of the decal is then invisible. Smoke tones are used in modeling where a surface is meant to be darkened and yet keep a cast of color.
Mix the pot properly before work; otherwise the settled pigment will shift the resulting tone. The thinner intended for this range and the thinning ratio are given by the manufacturer on the packaging, so keep to the instructions. Apply several light coats instead of one heavy one and let the surface flash off between them, otherwise the gloss coat ripples and creeps into the engraving. Wash and degrease the model before painting. A gloss finish forgives fewer mistakes than a matte one, because it brings out every unevenness of the base by reflection.
Try the strength of the tone on a piece of scrap plastic, and in the same light in which you look at the model. With smoke shades the result changes a great deal with the thickness of the coat, so proceed by thin sprays and look the work over between them. Lay masking tape only onto a cured finish; on a fresh gloss it will leave an imprint.
The paint is supplied on its own. Thinner, brushes, an airbrush and a kit are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
